PLGA-PEG-SS-Troponin (Poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-disulfide bond-polyethylene glycol-troponin) refers to a copolymer consisting of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), a disulfide (SS) linker, and troponin. The disulfide linker is a covalent bond between two sulfur atoms. Disulfide bonds are cleavable under certain conditions, such as in a reducing environment, making them useful in drug delivery systems for triggered release. Troponin is a complex of three regulatory proteins (troponin C, troponin I, and troponin T) that plays a crucial role in muscle contraction, particularly in the regulation of striated muscle contraction, including cardiac muscle. The inclusion of a disulfide linker (SS) suggests that the copolymer may be designed for triggered drug delivery. In a reducing environment, such as that found intracellularly, disulfide bonds can be cleaved, leading to the release of the payload (drug).
