Description

Graphene Oxide (GO) is a derivative of graphene, consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice with oxygen-containing functional groups. It has a notable advantage by comparison with other 2d materials (such as graphene) due to be easily dispersed within solution; allowing for processing at high concentrations. Graphene oxide is often used as a filler in polymer matrices to enhance mechanical properties, such as strength and stiffness. The functional groups on GO’s surface enable good compatibility with polymers. In addition, it is explored for drug delivery due to its biocompatibility. The functional groups on the surface can be easily modified to carry drug molecules, and the large surface area allows for high drug-loading capacity.
