Bis-(Norbornene-PEG23)-disulfides can undergo cross-linking via ROMP or other click chemistry reactions to form hydrogels. Hydrogels are three-dimensional networks of hydrophilic polymers that can absorb and retain large amounts of water, making them useful in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing applications. Norbornene is a bicyclic hydrocarbon with a double bond. It is often used as a monomer in polymerization reactions due to its ability to undergo ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), a type of olefin metathesis reaction.
