Cadmium Selenide Zinc Sulfide Quantum Dots (CdSe/ZnS QDs) are a specific type of semiconductor nanocrystal composed of a core of cadmium selenide (CdSe) and an outer shell of zinc sulfide (ZnS). This core-shell structure is engineered to enhance the optical and chemical properties of the quantum dots. The inner core is typically made of cadmium selenide (CdSe) crystals. Smaller cores emit shorter wavelengths (e.g., blue), while larger cores emit longer wavelengths. Surrounding the CdSe core is a protective shell made of zinc sulfide (ZnS). This shell serves several important purposes, including enhancing the quantum dots’ photoluminescent efficiency and stability. The ZnS shell acts as a barrier, preventing the release of toxic cadmium ions and reducing surface defects.
