6-Azido-6-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin (6-Azido-6-deoxycyclomaltoheptaose / 6-Monoazido-β-cyclodextrin / 6A-Azido-6A-deoxy-β-cyclodextrin) is a chemically modified cyclodextrin derivative, where an azido group (-N₃) replaces a hydroxyl group (-OH) at the 6-position of the glucose units in the β-cyclodextrin ring. Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of glucose monomers, and they form a cup-shaped structure with a hydrophilic exterior and a hydrophobic interior, making them excellent hosts for various guest molecules. Due to its ability to undergo click chemistry, this compound is valuable in bioconjugation for linking cyclodextrins to biologically active molecules, enhancing their properties, solubility, or specificity. In addition, β-Cyclodextrin is known for its ability to form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic drugs, improving their solubility and bioavailability. The azido modification allows further functionalization of the cyclodextrin, enabling targeted or stimuli-responsive drug delivery. For example, 6-azido-6-deoxy-β-cyclodextrin could be conjugated with targeting ligands (e.g., antibodies or peptides) to deliver drugs specifically to diseased cells, such as cancer cells or infected tissues.
