Agarospirol ((-)-Agarospirol / (2R,5R,10R)-α,α,6,10-Tetramethylspiro[4.5]dec-6-ene-2-methanol) is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol derived from agarwood (Aquilaria spp.), a resinous heartwood produced by trees in response to wounding or infection. This compound, along with other sesquiterpenes, contributes to the distinctive and highly valued fragrance of agarwood, making it important in perfumery, traditional medicine, and aromatherapy. Agarospirol is a key component in the complex scent profile of agarwood essential oil, highly prized for its rich, deep, and woody aroma. It is used in luxury perfumes and incense. In addition, agarospirol and other compounds in agarwood have been used in traditional Asian medicine for their purported therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and sedative effects.
