Aureothricin (1,2-Dithiolo[4,3-b]pyrrole, propanamide deriv. / N-(4,5-Dihydro-4-methyl-5-oxo-1,2-dithiolo[4,3-b]pyrrol-6-yl)propanamide / 5-Methyl-3-propionamidopyrrolin-4-one-[4,3-d]-1,2-dithiole / N-(4,5-Dihydro-4-methyl-5-oxo-1,2-dithiolo[4,3-b]pyrrol-6-yl)-propionamide) is a naturally occurring antibiotic with a structure that includes a chloro-substituted piperidine ring. It is produced by various bacterial strains and has unique chemical features that contribute to its bioactivity. Aureothricin acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the bacterial ribosome, disrupting the process of translation and effectively killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Studying the biosynthetic pathways of aureothricin in producing bacteria helps understand how this compound is naturally synthesized.
