Description

Biocytin [Epsilon-Biotinoyl-L-Lysine] consists of biotin (vitamin H) covalently attached to the ε-amino group of lysine through an amide bond. Biocytin serves as an affinity tag in protein purification and detection methods. Proteins or other molecules can be biotinylated using biocytin, and then purified or detected using streptavidin or avidin-based systems. Biocytin derivatives such as neurobiotin are used in neuroanatomical studies to trace neuronal pathways. Neurobiotin is injected into neurons, allowing visualization and mapping of neuronal projections and connectivity.
