Description

Mono-6-deoxy-6-(p-tolylsulfonyl)-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-OTs) is a derivative of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in which one of the hydroxyl groups at the C-6 position of a glucose unit is replaced with a p-toluenesulfonyl (tosyl or OTs) group. Functionalized β-cyclodextrins are used as catalysts or catalyst supports in various chemical reactions. β-CD-OTs can be used as a precursor to create β-CD derivatives with catalytic functionalities, such as metal-binding groups or enzyme-mimetic units. These modified cyclodextrins can act as supramolecular catalysts, enhancing the rate or selectivity of reactions by binding substrates in their hydrophobic cavities. β-cyclodextrin derivatives can also be employed as chiral catalysts or chiral ligands in asymmetric synthesis. The selective functionalization of β-CD at the C-6 position using β-CD-OTs can be used to introduce groups that facilitate enantioselective reactions.
